Sound Designer
STORYMEE HIRING: SOUND DESIGNER – THE AUDIO ARCHITECT FOR A CHARACTER UNIVERSE
Have you ever watched an animated film, closed your eyes, and realized you could still see the character just through their voice? Gollum's hiss, the giggles of the kids in Totoro, Mufasa's deep voice, Howl's panting when turning into a monster – those timbres don't happen by accident.
Have you ever heard a line of dialogue and wondered: "Why does this voice make me believe the character is a 300-year-old fox? Why does that voice make me see a 5-year-old child, not an adult faking a voice?"
Do you have a special ear – able to hear the difference between two voices that others consider "exactly the same"? Can you tell when a character needs to be "a bit more raspy," when they need to "push more through the nose," or when a single breath is enough to replace a whole sentence?
ABOUT STORYMEE
StoryMee is building an IP character universe with animation quality standards learned from the world's top studios – Disney, Pixar, Ghibli – but with a new era approach, where each character is an "emotional interface" connecting millions of audiences with their own stories.
In that world, sound is not an accessory – it is half of the character's soul. The audience may forget the color of a character's shirt, but they will remember their laugh for a lifetime.
And we are looking for someone to design those timbres – not just an audio technician, but a voice architect, someone who shapes how a whole universe of characters sounds.
THE ROLE OF SOUND DESIGNER AT STORYMEE
You are not just "casting voice talents" or "mixing audio." You are the one who determines the audio DNA of each character – what will shape how millions of audiences hear and remember the StoryMee universe.
Responsibilities include:
- Designing voice profiles for each IP character: original timbre, signature frequency, speaking rhythm, audio "tics" (breaths, tongue clicks, laugh styles), emotional range the voice can reach.
- Collaborating with scriptwriters and directors right from the character development stage to answer the question "what does this character sound like" – even before looking for voice talents.
- Casting and directing voice talents: choosing the right voices, guiding them to act according to the designed voice profile, ensuring character consistency across hundreds of episodes even with multiple voice actors.
- Building a Sound Identity Bible for each IP – a foundational document defining all audio aspects of the character (voice, laugh, breath, signature sound effects, musical motifs if any).
- Designing signature sounds: distinctive sounds associated with the character that the audience recognizes in 1 second (like Goofy's laugh, Rick's "Wubba lubba dub dub").
- Directing mixing and sound design for each episode: balancing voice, music, and sound effects so each character has their own audio space.
- Utilizing modern AI audio tools (voice cloning, voice modulation, AI sound effects) as an extension toolkit – to scale up to hundreds of episodes per year while maintaining quality and each character's unique signature.
- Acting as the audio gatekeeper: any voice leaving StoryMee must pass through your ears.
REQUIREMENTS
Mandatory:
- Have a trained ear – able to hear subtle differences between voices, distinguish frequencies, timbres, and vocal textures.
- Deep understanding of voice acting – knowing a dialogue can be read 20 different ways and why only 1 way is right for that specific character.
- Knowledge in sound design, mixing, mastering – proficient in at least one DAW (Pro Tools, Logic, Reaper, Audition, Cubase...).
- Understand the relationship between character personality and vocal timbre – why a villain might use a gentle voice, why a hero might stutter, and how those choices change the character.
- Love animation, movies, games, anime – and can analyze why good sound design (Ghibli, Pixar, Studio Trigger, Naughty Dog...) is good.
- Have aesthetic audio taste and know how to defend it.
Bonus Points:
- Experience in studio direction, casting voice talents, or acting as a voice director for film/animation/games/commercials.
- Have built audio identity for a brand, a series, a game – and seen it create a real impact.
- Can use next-gen AI audio tools (ElevenLabs, Suno, AI voice modulation, Adobe Podcast...) as creative partners, not human-replacing buttons.
- Understand phonetics, language phonology, and know how to exploit the characteristics of language to create characters.
- Musical background – play instruments, compose, or have done sound design for film/games.
- Have personal projects: a self-made podcast series, a short film you did sound for, a character whose voice you "designed" and posted somewhere.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING
Today, AI can generate thousands of voices in minutes. It can clone, change, modulate voices, and generate an entire cast of virtual actors.
But AI doesn't know which voice is right for which character. It doesn't know why a fox should have a slightly raspy voice instead of a crystal clear one. It doesn't know why an old lady in Hanoi stretches the end of a syllable differently than an old lady in Hue. It doesn't know when a second of silence is stronger than a whole line of dialogue.
Those decisions require a person with taste, ears, and an understanding of humanity. We need you.
A Sound Designer is not a tool operator. A Sound Designer is the one who decides how a whole universe will sound.

HOW TO APPLY
Your portfolio can be:
- Sound design / voice direction projects you have done (short films, animation, games, commercials, podcasts, audiobooks...).
- A self-made "case study": pick a famous animated character, analyze why its voice design is good (or bad), and how you would do it differently.
- Or a challenge: pick any character in a universe you love, redesign its voice profile (described in text + audio demo if possible) – show us how you think about sound.
- Any link / channel / project / playlist that shows your audio taste.
PS: If there's a voice design in your portfolio you're particularly proud of, note "listen to this first" and tell us 2-3 sentences about what choices you made and why. We will listen to it first – because how you explain your choices is as important as the result.
StoryMee – Where every character is a world, and every timbre is a unique unmistakable fingerprint.
